Spring 2015

The Black Hills Writers Group will publish the 2016 edition of, The Black Hills Literary Journal, in November 2015. Pieces selected will reflect the theme “Random Variables,” which may be interpreted as literally or figuratively as the writer chooses. We will publish in both paper and e-format, and will consider pieces in three categories: fiction, nonfiction (essay or memoir) and poetry.

  • For fiction and nonfiction, please submit pieces no longer than 3,000 words.
  • For poetry, you may submit up to three poems, no longer than seven pages of work in total, as one entry.

For each entry please enclose an entry fee of $5.00. (Members of the Black Hills Writers Group are exempt from the entry fee requirement.) If you submit your entry on line, please mail a check to BHWG, P.O. Box 1539, Rapid City, SD 57709. Note: You may submit only one entry in each category.

Please submit original work that has not yet been published (or has been published only in journals or magazines with circulation of less than 2,000 copies). We do not accept simultaneous submissions. By submitting, you grant us one time publication rights. After the journal is published in both formats, rights will revert to you. If you know writers elsewhere in the country, please feel free to forward this letter to them.

If your work is selected, you will receive a free copy of the journal and at-cost discounts on additional copies. We believe strongly that writers’ work has great value, and will also pay you for your pieces:

  • Short poems (fewer than 20 lines) and flash fiction/nonfiction (fewer than 500 words): $15.00
  • Longer poems, creative nonfiction and fiction (up to 3,000 words): $25.00.

We wish it could be more.

Our deadline for submissions is June 30, 2015. Please submit your work in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx), 12-point Times New Roman or Arial, double-spaced with one-inch margins. Place your name and contact information on the title page, but not on the actual pages of text. At the top of each page of text, include the title (or abbreviated title) and page number only. If your work is chosen for publication, we will also request a short biography and a small photograph. You can find formatting examples, submission guidelines and information on how judges will evaluate your writing below

Please email your manuscript to submissions@blackhillswritersgroup.org. (If you can’t do that, please submit three copies of your entry to: Black Hills Writers Group, Post Office Box 1539, Rapid City, South Dakota 57709.) If you have questions about the submission process or the theme, please direct your questions to that same email address.

We plan to launch the 2016 edition of our journal with a “gala” event in Rapid City in November, and hope it will reflect excellent writing. That, of course, is entirely up to you. Please help us produce a work of quality that readers will be proud to own.
